The Days Will Be Something Trampled

Sarah Bates

In seven months, I will return to everything as you left it.

I will listen to you looking for electricity, to you holding God

in your fist and spring in your sink.

I’ll forget how I wanted to hold in my pores

a body of broken bark, the sound of hungry beetles, the hands of kids afraid to play.

Sarah Bates studies poetry in the MFA program at Northern Michigan University, where she is also an associate editor for the literary journal Passages North. She has work forthcoming from The Normal School and Dirty Chai.
