Farther On

Laura Carter

We named the song “Fuse” because it is homely and can’t be caught in fire,

the best being illuminated
manuscripts: natural,

uncannily apropos.

I overheard one song
about water coming from

my neighbor’s apartment one morning,

and rushed to tell the world (therein)
that I had found Heraclitus

instead of God, that I had been saved
from fire

by river, but wait—

the other way is the fitted path.

*

When unfused, the song is
captured by
strange gestures

that occluded the first moon’s
harmony

by showing it up

for mistakes

we may have made therein.
